Memes to memories - Promises Unsaid live

Five tattooed performers pose on a blue-lit stage, smiling and making rock hand signs, with microphones and cables behind them.

Promises Unsaid: How Internet Culture Formed a Southern Tour Segment

There is something truly unique about modern meme culture. What began as a banter-filled exchange between two internet-dwelling meme lords unexpectedly evolved into booking half a regional tour. If you are wondering how an internet joke turned into interstate travel, midnight venues, and lots of planet fitness showers, let me tell you the story.

The Digital Meet-Cute

My meme game is top-notch. You would be hard-pressed to find a meme I haven’t shared already. Apparently, my online antics were loud enough to attract the attention of Jason McManamon, New York’s goofiest bassist. We instantly bonded over a shared, absurd love for internet humor and heavy music. Science may never fully explain how the digital algorithm connects like-minded weirdos, even on opposite sides of the country. Eventually, Jason dropped the inevitable pitch: he told me to check out his band, Promises Unsaid, where he slaps the bass. Normally, when someone asks me to listen to their project, I experience equal parts excitement and trepidation. The music scene is a gamble, and you never quite know what you are going to get.

Shattering Expectations

I truly did not know what to expect the first time I pressed play on Promises Unsaid. Pinning down their exact sound is a challenge. The melodies carry an intense, atmospheric mood, while the driving tempos and rhythm sections pull straight from modern pop-metal. The lyrics tackle heavy, dark themes, yet the energy remains remarkably upbeat and infectious. They even seamlessly weave rap-metal influences into their vocal flows and breakdowns. I was hooked and an immediate fan. Sharing them with my friends and blasting them at work as if they had me on payroll. Which, ironically, they eventually would.

From the Group Chat to the Gridiron

The band's East Coast tour kicked off on May 27th, heading toward a final culmination on June 13th in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Given how hard the music hit me, I jumped at the chance to book three of their southern tour dates, when Jason offered me the opportunity. The risk paid off. Promises Unsaid delivered explosive, high-octane performances that belonged on a major festival main stage rather than intimate local venues. The most impressive part of Promises Unsaid is the sheer versatility of the lineup. Every single member is a multi-faceted artist. Jaden and Alex both absolutely slay on guitar while trading off vocal duties across multiple tracks. Even front-man Caleb suddenly steps away from the mic, grabs a guitar and shreds alongside his bandmates. Not sure if the drummer, Adam, is even human at this point.

Memes to Memories

True to form, the band brought just as much chaotic adventure behind the scenes as they did on stage. Their journey through the South was a comedy of errors, featuring broken roller coasters, a booted tour van, and a pair of swimming trunks that vanished in Florida only to mysteriously resurface three days later in Louisiana. It was a tour filled with awesome openers, savvy sound techs, hungry musicians and open roads. What started as a couple of artists trading jokes in a comment section finished as an unforgettable run of live music. It turns out memes really can create lifelong memories.
